如何在写作中使用词组作状语

在写作中使用词组作状语表现为用英语非谓语动词结构构成的词组作状语。当表示目的、时间、原因、结果、条件、让步等时，写作中选择动词不定式作状语；当表示时间、原因、让步、条件、方式、结果和伴随时，选择分词作状语。

下面是各种词组状语的句子（请分析并归类例句中的粗体部分）：

（1）It was Thanksgiving again, which meant that my clan was going to have the annual “gathering” back at the Old Home Place.

（2）…and were scattered about the country with our own families…

（3）…but my eldest son followed me and sat cross-legged on the floor, craning forward, quietly and intently listening to the conversation.

（4）All my children and nieces and nephews were enjoying themselves—all except for my oldest son.

（5）Chinese immigrants brought the traditions with them when they came to America to work in gold mining camps and on the railroads in the mid-1800s.

（6）The Chinese New Year falls in late January or early February according to the Chinese lunar calendar…

（7）It also symbolizes fire, which is said to drive away bad luck and evil spirits…

（8）From ancient times to the present, Chinese people have welcomed in the New Year and chased away the evil spirits by setting off fire-crackers.

英语中的独立结构在句中作状语，表示时间、原因、条件、伴随等，也属于词组作状语的类别。独立结构主要用于描绘性文字中，因其用词简练，故在写作中使用独立主格结构, 能使得行文紧凑, 描述生动, 有很强的语言表现效果。

对英语非谓语动词结构的隐含逻辑主语把握不准容易造成垂悬结构现象。建议在写作时，先把完整的状语从句写出来，在这个基础上再用独立结构取代相应的状语从句。例如：

（9）a .After the work was finished, they went out to enjoy themselves. (完整的主从复合句)

        b .The work finished, they went out to enjoy themselves. (独立主格结构)

（10）a. After the meal was over, everyone reclined on the back porch of the old house.                                              (完整的主从复合句)

          b.The meal over, everyone reclined on the back porch of the old house. (独立结构)
