How did you begin playing?
My mom taught me to play the ukulele when I was four. I would play all the time. Sometimes my parents had to take it away from me so I would do homework or eat dinner!
Was there a time when music helped you?
Relations between my parents became difficult when I was in the fifth grade. It was hard to deal with those feelings. Music was good for me because I could put my feelings into the music. You have to have a way to control your feelings. But the most important thing is to have someone you can talk to.
What don’t many people know about you?
Only my friends know that I was very, very shy before I was a teenager. Even in high school, performing in front of crowds, I refused to use a microphone because I didn’t want to talk into it. I’d stay in the background while everybody was in front, singing.
What do you love about making music?
Listening to music is great, but it is creative to make your own music. As you do it, you use your body and your mind at the same time.
What’s your advice for kids?
I think we should be thankful and kind. And having a passion in life is so important. When you find something you love doing and want to become better at it, remember these three things: 1. Study. 2. Practice. 3. Make healthy choices.
