He was born in the Netherlands.
His father was a country minister.
For all the unhappy childhood he had, his mother, who was an artist with a short temper and unstable emotions, passed not only the love of art to him but also an unstable mind.
As his family had to face financial hardship, he was obliged to withdraw from a local elementary school and took a job in his Uncle’s art dealership.
In 1873, he was transferred to another art gallery in London where he immediately fell in love with the art of local culture.
When his marriage proposal was rejected by a landlady’s daughter, he suffered an emotional breakdown and was unable to work as an art dealer.
However, he found that the most effective way to maintain his emotional balance and stability was to devote himself to his artistic creation, such as painting, drawing and so on.
He was a prolific artist with more than 2100 works, including oil paintings, watercolors and drawings.
He, at the age of 37, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head due to a severely mental illness.
“I am a fanatic! I feel a power within me…a fire that I may not quench, but must keep ablaze”, he said.
He is considered as one of the greatest artists with post-impressionist paintings, which include “Starry Night” and “Sunflowers”.
