Do you think the Chinese education system hurts students’ creativity?Why or why not?
We often regard children as the hope of the nation may because young people are a group people who are highly creative. A children's creativity can be developed to which degree and whether he can make a creative contribution to the society , both of them depends on the education he received.However,while some people think Chinese education is suit for the development of student’s creativity,there are some other voices.I also agree with the opposing side,thinking Chinese education system hurts students’ creativity for these three reasons below:only concerning about the scores;overemphasizing the authority of books and teachers ,and intolerance of the mistakes.
The first reason why I think Chinese education system hurts students’ creativity is the enrollment system in China only concerning about scores.The goals of the education may be to improve the abilities of children or to cultivate their creativity.However,in China,almost every family deem entering a higher school to be the only reason of education.In this condition,we try to judge a better student by the exams.The scores, a quantitative index, become the only standard to measure whether a student is good or not.Therefore,people ignore the knowledge and ability of the students but just focus on the grades which lead the phenomenon that Chinese students just learn by rote memorization but don’t know how to use the knowledge,let alone the creativity.So the Chinese education system hurts students’ creativity.
Besides,overemphasizing the authority of books also results in the lack of creativity. Historically,China has the tradition of authoritarianism. Being a country of two-thousand-year feudalistic autocracy,the Chinese have developed the inertia of obeying authority.A famous American economist,Professor Ronald Coase,once commented that obedience to authority is a bad characteristic of the Chinese people.In the view of student,anything more knowledgeable than he is like teachers and books can be the authority.They may not object to what the teachers said out of a historical tradition of respect and obedience to authority.At the same time, they will accept everything written on the books.But we know that the book is not necessarily right.If we only pay attention to the book,we may lose our own discriminability,which naturally lead to the lose of our creativity.
Last but not least,the Chinese education system kills the creativity of children because the intolerance of the mistakes.Chinese character is always zero tolerance for mistakes.A writer said that Chinese are too perfectionist to allow children to make mistakes.You know, students become more and more cautious because they don't dare to make mistakes, which inhibits creativity.If talent is buried, how to play the potential and the pursuit of excellence of students.So,The Chinese tradition of not allowing children to make mistakes stifles their creative nature.
All in all,I think the Chinese education system hurts students’ creativity mainly because only concerning about the scores;overemphasizing the authority of books and teachers ,and intolerance of the mistakes.As children are and future of the country and creative should be,offering a good education for their upbringing means creating a bright and promising future for our nation.So it is time to change the Chinese education system.
