This article is based on the 41st Statistical Report on Internet Development in China published by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) in Beijing on January 31, 2018. I would like to visualize the data in the report. And then, the chart further reflects the changing trend of the entire Internet industry in China.
Let's have a look at some findings from the report.
Data show that from December 2015 to December 2017, the number of Internet users in China increased from 668 million to 772 million. Clearly, a steady growth trend has emerged from the chart.
However, the change in the number of netizens is not enough. First, we need to understand the changes in the popularity of the Internet in China. We also need to take into account changes in the total population. The data shows that from December 2015 to December 2017, the Internet penetration rate in China has increased from 48.8% to 55.8% over the past two years. Similarly, we can clearly observe a steady upward trend in the chart.
In the above two graphs on the number of Internet user and the penetration rate of the Internet, I chose a lighter color scheme to echo the theme of the Internet. At the same time, I chose blue and green colors, more in line with the style of scientific reporting.
Let us now take a look at whether the Internet users in China have made interesting changes in their choice of Internet access devices in the past few years. As of December 2017, the number of mobile Internet users in China reached 753 million, and the proportion of Internet users using mobile phones to access the Internet has increased from 95.1% in 2016 to 97.5%; at the same time, the proportion of Internet users using TV Internet access has also increased by 3.2%. 28.2%; desktop computers, notebook computers, and tablet computers all experienced declines in usage rates, and mobile phones continued to occupy other personal Internet access devices. From the chart we can see that the Internet in China is constantly being mobilized.
Here, I selected three contrasting colors to form my stacked column. Three contrasting colors represent three different types of Internet access devices. Putting them together allows readers to more clearly see the changes in the proportion of these three different types of Internet access devices over the past three years.
When judging industry trends, it should also pay attention to related listed companies. The data shows that in 2017, all types of Internet companies listed in China are rich in types of businesses, and game-type enterprises have made rapid progress in recent years, becoming the main force of listed companies on the Internet.
Here, I also selected several colors of the score to compose my Nightingale rose. In this icon, the difference in the proportions of each area is magnified, with larger ones appearing larger and smaller ones appearing smaller. Let readers feel the difference more intuitively.
The following are some of the information I got after visualizing the data: In general, the Internet industry in China is in a period of vigorous growth. The popularity of the Internet continues to rise, mobilization is ongoing, and there are various types of Internet companies listed.
