He Said, He Said: Science's Gender Gap

① A tally of female scientists carried out by Elsevier, a publisher, shows some progress towards equality, at least as regards academic papers.

② In eight countries and the European Union, the share of women authors grew from about 30% in the late 1990s to about 40% two decades later.

③ Brazil and Portugal are closest to equality, each just a percentage point shy of a 50-50 split.

④ In Japan, by contrast, barely a fifth of researchers are female.

⑤ Women are best represented in subjects related to health care, outnumbering men in nursing and psychology in several countries, but less than a quarter of researchers in the physical sciences are women; inventors who register patents are almost all men.

⑥ The share of patent applications by women has grown almost everywhere, but is just 26% in nearly-evenly-split Portugal.

⑦ The world still isn't making the most of the scientific brainpower of half of its population.
