July 2016：走马上任---“已知的未知”

May became British Prime Minister after her predecessor David Cameron stepped down in the wake of the U.K.’s vote to leave the European Union in the June 2016 referendum；In her first speech as prime minister, May appears in Downing Street, pledging to fight the “burning injustices” that hold people back.

She promises “a country that works for everyone” but will in fact find herself spending much of her time struggling with Brexit(旨在为人民谋福祉，却终期任期皆与脱欧周旋)；

April 2017：提前大选---错判形势，保守党失去优势

The moment that defined her premiership came, when she called a general election in a bid to(为了) increase her majority in Parliament in order to smooth the passage of Brexit legislation. However, the Labour Party lead by Jeremy Corbyn（杰里米·科尔宾，英国最大的反对党工党党魁） staged（上演了）a surprise resurgence（复苏；再起）, resulting in May’s Conservatives actually losing seats（失去席位）.

October 2018： 脱欧之外---保守党年会“尬舞”

May startles the audience at the Conservative Party Conference when she appears  on stage for a speech jigging（轻快地蹦跳）to Abba’s “Dancing Queen”. It was apparently a self-deprecating（adj. 自嘲的） reference to her dancing during a recent visit to Africa.

Jan 19,2019：至暗时刻--- “无协议、无希望、无头绪、无信心”

Lawmakers vote down (投票否决) May’s Brexit divorce deal by the crushing（adj.压倒性的） margin of 432 to 202, the worst such define modern British history（英国历史上执政党在议会头片表决中遭遇过的最惨重的失败）.

March 29,2019：进退维谷---“再次公投”or“重新大选” (详见于精读英文第68天)

Despite the embattled（adj.进退维谷的） prime minister’s dramatic promise on Wednesday that she would hand over the keys to 10 Downing Street （辞去首相职务）if her Tory colleagues backed the withdrawal agreement, parliament voted against it on Friday, by 344 to 286.

May 21, 2019：众叛亲离--- 内阁倒戈

In a last roll of the dice(最后一搏；原意为“最后掷一次骰子”), May promises a “new deal” on Brexit. It is immediately rejected by large numbers of Conservative lawmakers and the opposition Labour Party.

May 24, 2019：保留尊严--- 主动下台

“It will be for my successor to seek a way forward(寻求前路) that honours the results of the referendum. To succeed, he or she will have to find consensus in Parliament where I have not. Such a consensus can only be reached if those on all sides of the debate are willing to compromise.（达成共识，离不开各方的妥协）”

“Never forget that comprise is not a dirty word. Life depends on compromise.（妥协绝不是什么肮脏的字眼，人生就是充满了妥协)
