The number of car owners is increasing sharply in many parts of the world. Whether the advantages of this trend for individuals outweigh the disadvantages for the environment has triggered a heated discussion recently. While cars have undoubtedly brought about practical benefits for individuals, they have imposed great pressure on the environment.
Firstly, cars have increased the level of air pollution. Smoke billows from cars’ exhaust pipes every minute, which poses the biggest threat to the environment, so there's no denying that vehicles are major contributors to air pollution. Pollutants from vehicle exhaust can affect more than just the environment but individuals’ health, contributing to such problems as asthma, heart disease, birth defects and eye irritation.
Secondly, widespread car use can cause noise pollution as well. According to a survey, one of the most important noise pollution sources in almost all urban areas is car alarms, which have been imposed on city residents and car alarm noise can interfere with their working and studying capabilities. Furthermore, with more private cars, traffic congestion is inevitable.
Thirdly, more fossil fuels are consumed as more cars are used by individuals; as a consequence, the environmental pollution caused by the exhaust gas from automobiles becomes more and more serious. The exhaust gas from cars is contributing to the rise of global warming and affecting the ozone layer. When holes in the atmosphere's ozone layer allow ozone to come closer to the Earth, it contributes to smog. Though it’s tough to say exactly what percentage of air pollution comes from cars, it is reported that the percentage of air pollution caused by cars is higher in urban areas and higher still near major highways.
All in all, cars have more disadvantages for the environment than advantages of for individuals.
