Retaining wall
Fort Erie
Billy Bishop Airport
Sudbury
Porter Airlines
hydro
Good evening. The force of mother nature captured in cell phone video this afternoon as a massive wall of ice is blown off the water over a retaining wall and onto the Niagara River Parkway near Fort Erie. A powerful windstorm with gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour continues to make its way across southern Ontario. Storm is moving from Niagara toward the GTA where we’re already seeing trees threatening to fall over. Erica Natividad.
Here near Billy Bishop Airport by the water, it's really when you're by here that you can see… you can appreciate the force of these winds. Check out those waves back there, the sheer height of them as they crash against the end of the tarmac. It really is quite incredible now this windstorm already having substantial effects on travel today, especially on flights taking off from that airport across the way.
As the winds began to pick up at Billy Bishop Airport this afternoon, plenty of passengers were forced to make alternate plans after multiple flights were delayed or canceled. These two passengers from Ottawa were scheduled to fly out at 4:15 but opted not to risk getting stranded.
“We came in last night from Ottawa and we're supposed to be going back today. And because of the windstorm, we’ve actually decided to rent a vehicle so that we can make sure we can get at home this evening. The added expense is what’s going to affect us, but it’s… you know it’s not…we have to get home, we have to work tomorrow so…”
Others gambled on their flights being on schedule with mixed results.
“My Sudbury flight going from Toronto to Sudbury got canceled tonight, so I had to find alternative modes of transportation.”
“So far so good. We'll see how it goes. If I end up having to cancel and going tomorrow, I can do that. It's no problem. So I'm flexible, so I don't mind.”
“I know my flight on Porter is delayed, but that's okay.”
Across the GTA, the sheer force of the growing winds became more visible as the hours passed, wave seen crashing violently against the tarmac at Billy Bishop. But even at Woodbine beach, though, a few dedicated souls decided to brave the elements for a brisk walk. Even the seagulls seemed to be having a tough time. Brian Patterson, president of the Ontario Safety League, advises that if you don’t have to head out tonight, just don’t. And with a higher risk of downed power lines, keep an extra charger on hand as well as a flashlight instead of candles.
“The fire department is going to be busy enough right this week, and not to have to deal with small house fires that were completely preventable. And please do not waste 311’s time and 911 with non-critical, non-emergency issues.”
Another safety tip to keep in mind. If you do happen to come across a downed power line, you're advised to stay ten meters back and to tell Toronto Hydro right away by giving them a call. Now keep it locked to City news. We will be bringing you the latest as we continue to monitor this changing storm.
