“盈科”一词出于《孟子》一书，有两处。一处在《尽心上》，第24节；一处在《离娄下》，第18节。

        《尽心上》原文：“孟子曰：‘流水之为物也，不盈不行；君子之志于道也，不成章不达。’”寓义强调德行“渐修”的重要性，量的积累完成，才能实现质的变化。科学的东西来不得半点虚假。

        《离娄下》原文：徐子曰：“仲尼亟称于水曰：‘水哉水哉’，何取于水也？”孟子曰：“源泉混混，不舍昼夜；盈科而后进，放乎四海；有本者如是，是之取尔。苟为无本，七八月之间雨集，沟浍皆盈；其涸也，可立而待也！故声闻过情，君子耻之。”这里分辨有源之水与无源之水的区别，源为本，本立而道生。

          两处综合起来讲，水性既收敛又张扬，先收后扬，即“盈科而进”。做事儿，别心急，打好基本功，功到自然成。基本功，既有做人的基本功好德行，又有做事的基功道明术必精、术精不离道。这是今天我们所需要特别注意的。

The Origin and Implied Meaning of the Term 'Yingke'（Fill the potholes）

The term 'Yingke' originates from the book 'Mencius' and appears in two places. One is in 'Devotion to the Heart', verse 24, and the other is in the 18th section of 'Leaving Lou Xia'.

Mencius said, 'Water, as a substance, cannot flow without surplus; similarly, a gentleman's aspirations for the Tao cannot be realized without a comprehensive understanding.' This emphasizes the importance of gradual cultivation of moral character, and the accumulation of quantity is necessary to achieve qualitative change. Scientific truths cannot tolerate any falsity.

In the original text of 'Li Lou Xia', Xu Zi said, 'Zhong Ni urgently called on the water and said, "Water is water, how can we take it from water?" Mencius replied, "The source of water is like a thug who never gives up day and night; the Yingke River flows backward and spreads to the four seas; if there is a foundation, it is like this, it is taken from Er. If there is no foundation, the ravine will be filled with water during the rainy season between July and August; if it dries up, it can be left standing and treated. Therefore, a gentleman will feel ashamed when he hears and responds to emotions that exceed his understanding. Here, we distinguish the difference between active water and passive water, the source is the foundation, and the foundation is the way of life.
