Seven-step Poem
曹植【三国.魏】

Tree Kingdoms Period•Wei
煮豆持作羹，漉菽以为汁。
Beans are boiled to make thick soup,
The bean dregs are filtered out.
萁在釜下燃，豆在釜中泣。
The beanstalks are burning under the cauldron,
Inside which the beans are sobbing.
本自同根生，相煎何太急？
They are from the same root.
Why must the beanstalks torment the beans so hard?

1. 持：用来。
2. 羹：用肉或菜做成的糊状食物（thick soup ）
3. 漉(lù)：滤过：（filter)
4. 菽(shū)：豆类的总称
5. 萁(qí)：豆茎，豆秆（beanstalk ）
6. 釜(fǔ)：古代的一种锅（cauldron
7. 泣：小声哭（sob ）
8. 煎：煎熬，这里指迫害（torment）
9. dregs 渣滓
【译文】
煮豆来做豆羹，把豆子的渣滓过滤掉，留下豆汁来作羹。豆秆在锅底下燃烧，豆子在锅里面哭泣。豆子和豆秆本是同一条根上长出来的，豆秆怎能这样急迫地煎熬豆子呢？
【作者简介】
曹植（192－232），字子建，沛国谯（今安徽省亳州市）人，三国曹魏著名文学家，建安文学代表人物。魏武帝曹操之子，魏文帝曹丕之弟，生前曾为陈王，去世后谥号“思”，因此又称陈思王。后人因他文学上的造诣而将他与曹操、曹丕合称为“三曹”。
