Unit 38 What do you think of him?

A. Texts & Notes

1. I like the way he smiles.

(In the library, Kate is reading 'Hamlet' and Amanda is reading Keats. But they are talking about someone else.)
Amanda: What do you think of Bob Wells? Do you like him?
Kate: Well …
Amanda: I think he's very nice. I like the way he smiles. And I like the way he speaks, too. He's got a sexy voice.
Kate: A sexy voice!
Amanda: Shush! Yes. And he is very nice, Kate. He helps you if you can't understand something. He helped me yesterday.
Kate: Oh, yes …
Amanda: So what do you think of him?
Kate: I don't know him, really. perhaps he's nice, but he's very quiet. He never says anything.
Amanda: Oh, there he is! There, you see. Don't you like the way he smiles?
Kate: I thought you were going out with Matthew. Isn't he your boyfriend?
Amanda: Sh! Bob's coming over.

What do you think of (him)?
  I think he's nice.(我认为他不错。)
I think he knows his job.
  I don't think he's nice.(我认为他不好。)
I like the way he speaks.(我喜欢他说话的方式。)
I like the way he lets us get on with it.(我喜欢他那样放手让我们干活。)
  I don't like the way she sings.(我不喜欢她那种唱法。)
  Perhaps he's nice, but he's very quitt.(也许他是不错,可他很少说话。)
  That's right but he …
  I agree but he's very alow.(我同意,但他太慢吞吞的了。)
  I don't really know him.(我不怎么了解他。)
  I can't really say.(不好说,很难说。)

注2. I thought you were going out with Matthew.
  I thought you were out.(我还以为你不在家。)

2. What do you think of her singing?

(Amanda comes into Matthew's room. They have got some new records.)
Amanda: Cleo Laine. What do you think of her singing?
Matthew: I like it's very good.
Amanda: And there's a Jack Jones record here. I really like the way he sings. Let's listen to him.
Matthew: Sorry.
Amanda: Oh, why not? He's better singer than any of these.
Matthew: He's not better than Cleo Laine. He's a different kind of singer.
Amanda: Diffrent, and better. Clea Laine doesn't sing as well as Jack Jones. So let's listen to Jack Jones.
(But they can't. The record-player is broken.)

What do you think of her singing?(你认为他唱得怎么样?)
What do you think of his dancing?(你认为他跳舞跳得怎么样?)
What do you think of the way Cleo Laine sings?(你觉得克利奥▪雷恩唱得怎么样?)
 I like it. I think it's good.
I think she sings very well.
I like the way she sings.
 I don't like it.
 I don't think it's very good.
I don't think she sings very well.

注4. He's a better singer than any of them.
She is a better teacher than any of them.(她是他们中最好的老师。)

Cleo Laine sings better than Jack Jones.
 Brian plays better than Peter.
I don't think Cleo Laine sings than as well as Jack Jones.

3. What a face!

(at the exhibition, … )
Bob: What do you think of her, Kate?
Kate: I don't think she's very nice. What a face!
Bob: Yes, terroble.
Kate: Her legs are too thin.
Bob: And she's got a big head.
Kate: Her boyfriend's no better. I don't like the look on his face.
Bob: And his arms are too long.
Amanda: Matthew. What do you think of Kate?
Matthew: I don't like the way she walks.
Amanda: And I don't like the way she talks. Or the way she smiles. Or the way she laughs.
Matthew: And I don't like the way she says things about her friends and laughs at them.
Amanda: And Bob's no better. In face, he's worse than she is.

6. Her boyfriend is no better.
Her borfriend is as bad as she is.

注7. I don't like the look on his face.

I like the way he laughs.(我喜欢他大笑的样子。)
I don't like the way he laughs at people.(我不喜欢他嘲笑别人。)
