( Debble telle her friend Barbara: "I've got a place in King Street. The place itself is all right. But there's a woman who lives downstairs. She laughs a lot.")
Woman: The kitchen!
Debble: Oh. yes. Is the cooker gas or electric?
Woman: Gas, dear.
Debble: And there's a fridge.
Woman: Oh, yes, yes.
Debble: It's got central heating.
Woman: Here we are, dear. It's a very warm room and comfortable.
Debble: Um — bathroom and toilet?
Woman: Outside, turn left, dear.
Debble: Do we all use the same bathroom and toilet.
Woman: There's another toilet downstairs. But we all use the same bathroom. Not at the same time, of course.

Barbara: Cheers!
Richard: Well?
Barbara: It looks good and it is good. But the potatoes need a little salt. I'll get it.
Richard: No, Barbara!
(Barbara goes to the kitchen and comes back with a baking-dish.)

Richard: Yes, darling?
Barbara: What's this?
Richard: That?
Barbara: Yes. And this? It looks terrible.
Richard: Yes, it does. And it looks terrible. Please sit down and finish your meal, darling.
Barbara: But what is it?
Richard: Yorkshire pudding, roast beef, roast potatoes.
Barbara: What happened?
Richard: Well, I had an accident.
Barbara: What about this?
Richard: I bought it at the corner restaurant.
Barbara: Ah! Well, we'll go there tomorrow.
Richard: Why?
Barbara: I can talk to the cook. He certainly knows how to make very good Yorkshire pudding.

Barbara: It looks new.
Peter: Ah, but it's old. It's fifty-five years old.
Barbara: No, Is it really?
Peter: It's green. and it's got two doors. It's bigger than the earlier Bentley, of course.
Richard: It certainly looks longer than a moden car.
Peter: It is. And who wants a moden car when you can get a car like that?

注7. 形容词的比较级变化归纳如下:
(1) 单音节或双音节形容词加 -er:
long → longer;short → shorter
(2) 单音节以一个辅音字母结尾的形容词将这个字母双写,再加 -er:
big → bigger;fat → fatter
(3) 双音节以 y 结尾的形容词变 y 为 i ,再加 -er:
early → earlier;easy → easier
(4) 多音节形容词在前面加 more:
modern → more modern;difficult → more difficult
(5) 不规则变化:
good → bdtter;bad → worse
注8. 表示比较的两种说法:
(1) A 比 B 更 ……:A is (比较级)than B. 例:
Your car is bigger than mine.(你的车比我的大。)
My car looks more modern than yours.(我的车看上去比你的样式更新。)
(2) A 和 B 一样:A is as (原级)as B. 例:
Your car is as fast as mine.(你的车和我的一样快。)
It's not as good as a modern car.(它不像新式车那么好。)
注9. really 意思是真正的、真实的,常用来表示惊讶、怀疑、关心、异议等。如:课文中 Peter 说:Bought a car — did you really? 表示对 Richard 买汽车事的惊奇。后来 Peter 说他的车有五十五年的历史了。巴巴拉又说:No — is it really?也表示了惊奇和怀疑。Really?意思是真的吗?
注10. Bentley 是汽车的牌子(make),一般一个牌子的汽车每年有一个新型号(model)。

5. Reading Material:
Here's an exciting way to travel to Britain. By hovercraft. The hovercraft is the quickest route across the Channel: it only takes about 35 minutes to trovel from France to Ramsgate or Dover. The hovercraft is something special. It's not a ship, it's not an aircraft. It travels just above the water.
What's it like to trovel across the English Channel by hovercraft? Let's ask a few passengers who are making the trip …
Hovercrafts are big enough to carry coacher and cars as well as passengers. It's much quicker than going by ship.
At the end of the trip the hovercraft comes straight out of the sea and then it site down on the ground. Maybe you want to try something different when you come to Britain next time. Coming by hovercraft is different.
