The Chinese nation has a deep-rooted tradition of reading and stresses the need to study the nature of things to acquire knowledge, to be sincere in thought, and to rectify the mind. Such stories abound. For example, Kuang Heng, a renowned scholar in the Western Han Dynasty, was born into a poor family but famously chiseled a hole in the next-door neighbor’s wall to “borrow light” in order to read. Similarly, the boy Sun Kang, who grew into a prestigious writer in the Jin Dynasty, read by the light reflected off the snow in winter. There are also many proverbs that underscore the importance of reading, such as “It is by the Odes that the mind is aroused. It is by the Rules of Propriety that the character is established. It is from Music that the finish is received.” and “While learning is the foundation of life, reading is the foundation of learning.” Indeed, reading is an important means to acquire knowledge, increase wisdom and build character; it helps individuals enlighten the mind, nurture high ideals, and cultivate noble character.
