Chapter 8

"Daybreak! Two players were killed last night—no order of death specified. Players 1 and 6 have been eliminated, and they are not allowed to leave final words. Do Players 1 and 6 wish to activate any special skills? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Player 6 has torn up the Sheriff's badge. The Sheriff's badge is lost in this game. Based on the random number 7, Player 7 will start the speeches in counterclockwise order." Eve wasn't surprised—the wolves had clearly thought Player 6 was the real Seer. But the fact that Player 6 hadn't passed the Sheriff badge to anyone proved she wasn't the Seer. Eve smiled to herself—the wolves had picked the wrong target.

Player 7 suddenly claimed, "I'm the Seer! I checked Player 8 on the first night—she's gold water. I checked Player 4 on the second night—he's a wolf. So we vote out Player 4 today." She added, "I'm suspicious of Player 10. I'll investigate him tonight." Eve had to fight to hold back a laugh. There's no such thing as an off-ballot Seer! she thought. Player 7 hadn't even joined the nomination phase—how could she suddenly claim to be the Seer now? And she'd given Eve gold water without even specifying her exact identity. Players 4 and 10 were definitely good people who had been mistakenly suspected.

Player 5 confessed, "I'm the Half-Breed who chose Player 10 as my role model. That's why I pulled all those weird stunts earlier." Eve didn't buy it—Player 10 had only said "pass" during the nomination phase. How could Player 5 have judged his identity from that one word and decided to pull all those tricks? She still couldn't tell if he was a good person or a wolf.

Then Player 4 spoke up, "I'm the real Seer! I checked Player 6 on the first night—she's a Villager. That's why I said during the nomination phase that either Player 5 or Player 6 could be the Seer. I was hoping Player 6 would proxy claim for me, but Player 5 jumped the gun instead, and Player 6 didn't claim at all." He explained, "I thought Player 5 was a good person too, so I didn't come forward yesterday. But after hearing my confirmed good person Player 6's speech, I checked Player 10 last night—he's the Witch. I have to come forward now to set the record straight." He declared firmly, "We vote out Player 7, the fake Seer, today. Tonight, I'll investigate Player 2, whom my confirmed good person Player 6 suspected." He then smiled and mentioned the unwritten rule that there was no off-ballot Seer. Before he could finish his sentence, Player 7 called out, "We concede! We concede!" Player 2 quickly echoed her.

"The wolf team chooses to concede. Game over. The good team wins!"

Everyone gathered to review the game afterward. Eve learned that Player 13, whom Evelyn had voted out on the first day, had been the Mechanical Wolf; Player 1, whom she'd suggested the Witch poison, had been a wolf; Player 2, whom she'd suspected, had been a wolf; and Player 5, whom she'd defended, had indeed been a good person. While she had misjudged Players 4 and 10, her suspicions had all been backed by solid logic. Although the good team's victory had largely been due to the wolves' mistakes, Evelyn's outstanding performance had been an undeniable factor in their win.
