元旦New Year's Day

Happy New Year!

As is known to all, New Year's Day is one of the favorite holidays for people all over the world.

People usually celebrate this festival on the night of December 31 to January 1.

In china, January 1 is China's New Year's Day in solar calendar, and it is called "Yuan Dan".

The word "Yuan Dan" first appeared in the Book of Jin.

The "Yuan" means "beginning", and the "Dan" refers to the "day" in Chinese, so "Yuan Dan" means "the first day of the year".

Today's New Year's Day was established in 1949 at the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and January 1 on the solar calendar was made the New Year's Day.

The Conference also dicided to adopt the Gregorian calendar system or solar calendar

Surely, the lunar calendar has not been abolished.

Nowadays, traditional Chinese festivals still follow the lunar calendar.

Actually, New Year's Day (Yuan Dan) and the Spring Festival are two seperate holidays to celebrate the beginning of a new year according to the solar and lunar calendars respectively.

New Year's Day is not so significant for the chinese people compared to the Spring Festival which falls on the 1st day of the lunar calendar.

For instance, there are three days off on New Year's Day but seven days off on Spring Festival or even longer.

The customs of China's New Year's Day are similar to that of Spring Festival.

Many people set off fireworks on the outskirts.

Some families may regard this day as a day of reunion and dinner, while more intensive celebrations are held on the eve of the traditional Spring Festival.

On the night of December 31, TV stations usually hold  New Year's countdown parties, inviting many celebrities to welcome the New Year with audiences.

In foreign counties, New Year's Day is a big festival.

So how do people celebrate the new year around the world?

one of the most popular ways to celebrate New Year's Day is  enjoying big fireworks displays.

Although coronavirus restrictions around the world may prevent big crowds in some places, fireworks are still expected to be fired up, so people can watch them from a distance.

In New Zealand, Auckland Sky Tower is usually part of an impressive fireworks display and the same happens in Sydney Harbour in Australia.

In Toronto in Canada, it's in Nathan Phillips Square, while in Ril de Janeiro in Brazil, it's the city's famous Copacabana beach where the sky is lit up by firework.

As a result, other cities in the US now have their own traditions of dropping things on New Year's Eve.

When the clocks hit midnight in Spin, you'll find people reaching for grapes.

This is because there is a tradition to eat one grape each time the clock strikes at midnight.

The idea is that this will bring you 12 lucky months in the year ahead.

Dressing up as bears

In Romania, there is a tradition for people to dress up dancing bears to chase away any evil spirits.

This is because bears are magical according to old Romanian stories and are able to protect and heal people.

Ringing bells

Some countries, like Japan and South Korea, ring bells to start the New Year.

They do this by throwing old furniture out of the window.

Walking an empty suitcase “瘤”空行李箱

In some South American countries, you might see some people on New Year's Eve walking around with an empty suitcase.

Some believe that taking what is called a "suitcase walk" means they will have a year full of  advantages ahead.

Genarally, wherever they are, New Year traditions are designed to bring luck and good fortune in the year ahead.
