When Eve finished sorting through her thoughts, she looked up and saw Evelyn chatting happily with the others up ahead, and a warm current surged in her heart. In that first game, Evelyn had won the Sheriff badge during the nomination phase without even knowing she was the real Seer's confirmed good person. She'd led the good team to vote out the Mechanical Wolf on the first day, given the Seer plenty of useful advice, and even taken a hit for the Seer on the second night, forcing the wolves to concede the game right then and there. She'd played brilliantly as a wolf in the later rounds too.
Eve thought to herself that she was going to play with Evelyn again tomorrow, and she hoped she'd get to be on the wolf team with her this time. But why did she feel such strong affection for Evelyn? The first time they'd met, she'd picked Evelyn as her role model the moment she'd drawn the Half-Breed card. The second time they'd played, she'd still found herself instinctively aligning with Evelyn. She resolved to hold back a little tomorrow—it would be best if they drew the same role, and if she got the Half-Breed again, she wouldn't pick Evelyn as her role model. This was a game for thirteen people, not just her and Evelyn.
Eve's dormitory was closer. When she reached the door, she said goodbye to Evelyn and the others. Evelyn waved at her with a smile, and she waved back, smiling too. At that moment, it felt like everyone else had faded away, leaving only the two of them in the world—or maybe the two of them were one and the same. Eve stared off into space for a second, then shook her head to dispel the strange thought.
