The Double Ninth Festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month on the Chinese lunar calendar. Nine in Chinese sounds the same as “久”, a Chinese character that menas "long". So wishing old people a long life is the cultural meaning of the festival.
Caring for old people is a traditional Chinese virtue. A report made online by China Youth Daily polled 1527 Chinese under 40 years old. It shows that more and more young people show their love for the old on the Double Ninth Festival.
When people are asked hey way they show love for old, more than 70% of them say they show love by caring about their health. 69% say they spend more time with old people. 43% say they give enough money to old people. More than 30% say they teach old people how to use smart phones better.
Lili, a 21-year-old student, says she spends the festival with her grandparents almost every year. It makes them feel satisfied.
