2018-10-07 Week1_Stargirl

Usually I'd like to read a book twice because the second time I can read it feeling at ease instead of urging to know the ending.

There were hundreds of us, milling about, calling names, pointing to summer tanned faces we hadn’t seen since June.

1. mill v.

move about in a confused manner

mill around ; mill about

And then I saw her. At lunch. She wore an off-white dress so long it covered her shoes. It had ruffles around the neck and cuffs and looked like it could have been her great-grandmother's wedding gown. Her hair was the color of sand.

2. 如果让我说意思一样的句子,我可能会用这样的方法:

She wore a so long off-white dress that it covered her shoes.

大家看现在的小朋友上学都很辛苦,每个人都背着和自己差不多大的书包上学,那如果我们说小朋友背了个超级大的书包,几乎盖住了自己身体的一半,该怎么说呢?

The girl wears a bag so big it covers half of her body.

Her back was to us, so I couldn't see her face. No one sat with her, but at the tables next to hers kids were cramming two to a seat. She didn't seem to notice. She seemed marooned in a sea of staring, buzzing faces.

3. cram v.

If you cram things or people into a container or place, you put them into it, although there is hardly enough room for them.

If people cram into a place or vehicle or cram a place or vehicle, so many of them enter it at one time that it is completely full.

Apparently by comparing the seats no one takes around stargirl and those crammed by more than one kid, the author showed how stargirl was segregated by others.

When we got to school the next day, Hillari Kimble was holding court at the door.

4. hold court

上朝,开庭,君主到朝廷上处理政事

这个说法很形象啊,瞬间我就想到了读书年代中,每个年级每个校园一定都有个大姐头,其他小朋友都摄于她的淫威之下。

"The administration. The principal. Who else? Who cares? " Hillari wagged her head at the absurdity of the question.

5. wag v.

move from side to side

The dog was biting, growling and wagging its tail.

He wagged a disapproving finger.

Usually being used to describe disagreement or disrespect, like another sentence in the same chapter:

Kevin wagged his head and grinned.

"I'll tell you one thing, " Kevin said as we joined the mob in the hallways, "she better be fake."

I asked him what he meant.

"I mean if she's real, she's in big trouble. How long do you think somebody who's really like that is going to last around here?"

Good question.

On the way to the next class they still looked out the windows. Stargirl was still outside. In the rain. Dancing.

We wanted to define her, to wrap her up as we did each other, but we could not seem to get past "weird" and "strange" and "goofy." Her ways knocked us off balance.

6. wrap v.

If you wrap up, you put warm clothes on.

In time “Hillari’s Hypothesis” (so called by Kevin) about Stargirl’s origins gave way to other theories.

She was trying to get herself discovered for the movies.

She was sniffing fumes.

She was homeschooling gone amok.

She was an alien.

The rat she brought to school was only the tip of the iceberg.

She had hundreds of them at home, some as big as cats.

She lived in a ghost town in the desert.

She lived in a bus.

Her parents were circus acrobats.

Her parents were witches.

Her parents were brain-dead vegetables in a hospital in Yuma.

This is the power of words. People stop thinking, making decisions by listening to rumors other than by their own observation.

She laughed when there was no joke. She danced when there was no music.

She had no friends, yet she was the friendliest person in school.

In her answers in class, she often spoke of sea horses and stars, but she did not know what a football was.

She said there was no television in her house. She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew.

It's ironic.
