BECAUSE THE GAME OF HIDE-AND-SEEK was still going on, it took Edmund and Lucy some time to find the others.
It takes sb.some time to do sth
I should not be at all surprised to find that the other world had a separate time of its own; so that however long you stayed there it would never take up any of our time.
Lucy burst out:“…Edmund and I both got in. We met one another in there, …"
burst out :大声喊叫; 突然发生了什么 burst out crying 或者burst into tears
And now we come to one of the nastiest things in this story. Up to that moment Edmund had been feeling sick, and sulky, and annoyed with Lucy for being right, but he hadn’t made up his mind what to do. ...
He decided to let Lucy down.
And now we come to one of the nastiest things in this story.
Up to that moment和之前提到的by this time用法很像,后文还出现了Peter说的话 “Up till now, I’d have said Lucy every time.”
let sb. down:
to disappoint someone by failing to do what you agreed to do or were expected to do:
You will be there tomorrow - you won't let me down, will you?
And Edmund gave a very superior look as if he were far older than Lucy (there was really only a year’s difference) and then a little snigger and said,
If one thing or person is superior to another, the first is better than the second.
eg.“There you are, then,” said Hermione in a superior tone.
“But it’s all nonsense,” said Edmund, very taken aback.
(be )taken back 吓了一跳,吃了一惊
that’s just the point. Lu was perfectly all right when we left home, but ...
that’s just the point是指关键就在这,本章出现了好几次,例如后面老教授说“That is a point,” said the Professor, “which certainly deserves consideration; ..." That is the very thing that makes her story so likely to be true...
You’ve always liked being beastly to anyone smaller than yourself; we’ve seen that at school before now.
(informal, old-fashioned If you describe something as beastly, you mean that it is very unpleasant.
The weather was beastly.
“Do stop it,” said Susan; “it won’t make things any better having a row between you two. ..."
have a row吵架,也出现过。
it won't make things better不算是句型,但是进行仿写还是可以一用。
The two older ones were really beginning to think that Lucy was out of her mind.
out of one's mind
“it’s getting beyond us.” So they went and knocked at the study door, and the Professor said “Come in,” and got up and found chairs for them and said he was quite at their disposal.
beyond sb.
at their disposal 听任差遣
Then he cleared his throat and said the last thing either of them expected:
the last thing they expected He is the last person I want to see.
She laughed again, as if she said something very witty, and held my hand for a moment, looking up into my face, promising that there was no one in the world she so much wanted to see
For instance—if you will excuse me for asking the question—
for instance举例
if you will excuse me
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to secure the perimeter.
in general, I’d say the same as Peter, ...
本句出现了the same as 与...一样
“That is more than I know,” said the Professor, “and a charge of lying against someone whom you have always found truthful is a very serious thing; a very serious thing indeed.”
That is more than I know超出我的理解,翻译“那我就不知道了”
a charge of lying中chagrge n.控告
一般会见到on charge of这样的搭配或on...charge
You are under arrest on the charge of willful murder.
While in office, she could not be tried on criminal charges.
“Logic!” said the Professor half to himself. “Why don’t they teach logic at these schools? There are only three possibilities. ..."
Probability and Possibility
A thing that may exist or happen is called as possibility whereas the occurrence of an event out of all sorts of possibility is called as probability
Probability indicates the extent to which an event is likely to occur.
Possibility is the universal set whereas probability is the subset.
Possibility is surer to occur than probability.
Possibility has its opposite in the word impossibility whereas probability has its opposite in the word improbability.
Probability is a theory whereas possibility is a happening.
Happenings have to combine together to make a probability a possibility.
“What has that to do with it?” said the Professor.
“Nothing is more probable,” said the Professor, taking off his spectacles and beginning to polish them, while he muttered to himself,...
应该是nothing is more+adj.+than to+v.
The sixth age shifts into the lean and slippered pantaloon.
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side, his youthful hose, well saved, a world so wide.
She felt that the conversation was beginning to get off the point.
off the point 跑题了
And when parties of sightseers arrived and asked to see the house, the Professor always gave them permission, ...
Oh bother those trippers!
Right beside the gates, in a small group that was carefully shielded from the crowds by the police, stood the five famous children, together with the grown-ups who had come with them.
